Mikayla Moore showed a champion’s spirit and determination in her second weekend racing in MotoAmerica Twins Cup Sept. 13-15. The two-time and reigning MotoAmerica Royal Enfield Build. Train. Race. champion teamed up with OrangeCat Racing to ride a Yamaha YZF-R7 at the MotoAmerica round at Circuit of the Americas. Despite several setbacks with her motorcycle’s electronics, Moore still qualified 19th and ran as high as 11th place in Saturday’s Race 1 before concluding the weekend with a points-paying finish in Sunday’s Race 2.
Moore ended the 2024 Twins Cup season with 10 championship points – which was enough for her to finish 24th in the points standings even though she took part in just four of the season’s 12 races. Moore has won 14 of the 15 Royal Enfield Build. Train. Race. Contests she has competed in – including winning all seven races on her way to clinching the 2023 title.
Moore’s weekend at Circuit of the Americas started on a downer note, as she didn’t take part in Friday morning practice due to some electrical gremlins with her machine. The team was able to resolve those problems in time for the Friday afternoon Qualifying 1 session, which Moore finished with the 29th -fastest time (2:34.717). The team worked overnight to further resolve the bike’s electronics issues, and Moore’s pace greatly improved Saturday morning. She put in a 2:29.274 lap time – about 5.5 seconds faster than her best Qualifying 1 time – to qualify 19th for the round’s two Twins Cup races.
When Race 1 got underway late Saturday afternoon, Moore finished the first lap in 17th place and was running in 11th place when the race was stopped on Lap 4 due to a crash. When racing resumed with five laps remaining, Moore finished the first lap running in 14th place, but some adjustments made to the bike’s electronics didn’t pan out and Moore had to retire from the race on Lap 2.
Moore put in a stellar first lap in Sunday’s Race 2, as she completed Lap 1 running in 14th place after starting in 19th . Moore moved up another position on Lap 2 and ran five of the six remaining laps in that position to finish 13th . The three points she earned with that result gave her 10 Twins Cup championship points for the 2024 season.
